Neil Jordan passes the baton...

Ireland's Neil Jordan is taking a back seat for his new Hollywood blockbuster a movie called The Actors.

He has handed the Director's job over to the young Irish playwright Conor McPherson, who has also wrote the screenplay for the movie.

Filming on the new movie is set to start over the next week with the film's main star Michael Caine arriving into Dublin last Thursday.

This is McPherson's third film while it is Caine's 126th.

Acting with Caine will be the Irish comic Dylan Moran, Miranda Richardson and maybe even Gabriel Byrne.

McPherson's first job on the set will be to order the birthday cakes. Over the next three weeks there will be three birthday's on the set.

Neil Jordan will be 52, and on March 3rd Miranda Richardson will be 44. While Michael Caine or Maurice Joseph Micklewhite as he was originally know will be 69 on March 14th.

This will however be the least of McPherson's worries. This will be his first big budget movie to direct and also the first movie he has made without the Irish actor Peter McDonald as his leading man.

Both McPherson's first two films, the 1997 hit I Went Down and his less then big hit Saltwater in 2000, both had McDonald as the leading man.

The Actors will be made in Ardmore Studios at a cost of 6.3 million euro and will be produced by Jordan, who has also put Caine up at the new apartment block down the road from his own home in Dalkey.

Caine will stay in the luxury Coliemore Apartments where actress Cate Blanchett is also staying while she is shooting her new movie The Veronica Guerin story.

The Actors will put Caine back working with Jordan's film firm The Company of Wolves Production Company for the first time since the 1986 movie Mona Lisa.

The Actors tells the story of a struggling Irish actor who uses his skill to get a friend out of trouble with a gangster. As things go wrong the actor has to play more and more roles to cover things up.
