No Irish premier of PH so here's the UK's...

At the Premier of Pearl Harbor British star Kate Beckinsale described to the press the low-key British premiere of her new movie Pearl Harbor as scarier than the multi-million pound extravaganza held in Hawaii.

Makers of the wartime blockbuster, which is the most expensive movie ever made, spent a reported 3.5 million on the official launch of the movie in Pearl Harbor last week.

The premiere took place on board a real US aircraft carrier and included a fly-past by navy jets. But the 28-year-old actress, daughter of 70s sitcom star Richard Beckinsale, said she was more nervous about last night's low-key event in London's Leicester Square.

Thousands of fans gathered outside the Odeon cinema to catch a glimpse of Beckinsale and her co-stars, American heart-throb Josh Hartnett and Trainspotting actor Ewen Bremner.

She said: "This is much noisier and scarier than it was in Hawaii because it is Britain and my friends and family are all here."

Bremner agreed with his co-star, describing the screaming fans outside the cinema as "wild". "People in Hawaii were much more reserved and there were no real fans there. Here it is kind of wild," he said.

The film has opened to poor reviews but nevertheless has enjoyed good box office returns since it opened in the US at the weekend. Pearl Harbor's producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, who also made films such as Top Gun, said the critics were entitled to their opinion but it was the public that mattered. "The people are the ones who pay to see it and they have been doing so in large numbers in America. We hope it is the same here," he said.

Hartnett carried on the tradition of partially dressing down for movie premieres by wearing a pair of scruffy brown boots with a smart navy suit.

Other celebrities attending the premiere included Royle Family star Ralf Little with his girlfriend Lisa Rogers, actress Amanda Holden and comedian David Baddiel.
